Southern PCB Golf Day and Dinner

An unbelievable hole-in-one by Steve Thomas was the high point of our annual
golf day which was again held at the Wiltshire Golf Club. It was the biggest
attendance that we have ever had and a fitting celebration of our 15th year.
The sun shone all day which was a welcome change. The course was showing
signs of weeks of rain but most of the greens were in excellent condition.
The nearest the pin competition was a formality after Steve holed out at the 9th hole. The longest drive was keenly fought with all the usual long hitters appearing on the list. Alan Slade, Brian Reid, Angus Brunton and David Fitzgerald. They were all eclipsed by Trevor Pope who was playing his first time with us. We are all so grateful for our sponsors who again provided the resources to help stage this event. Lloyd Doyle are the main sponsors for the competition and Roy Lloyd was with us again to present the prizes. I am not sure how to report the prize giving proceedings. There was considerable light hearted confusion as to who had actually won the overall competition. Brian Haken helped resolve this by discovering the winning card somewhere near the bottom of the pile. Paul Griffiths and Taff Keegan had scored 42 points and were duly awarded their glassware and trophies. Mark Rogers and Martin Malone had a brief moment of glory but amicably settled for second place with 40 points. Steve Thomas was presented with a golf bag that had been embroidered with the competition and date to mark his achievement of a hole-in-one. Bill Wilkie once again amused us with his observations and tales. This was a hilarious session and had all of us doubled up with laughter. Our usual raffle followed where the many prizes that had been donated were drawn. Particular thanks to Mike Partridge (Golf Vouchers), Nigel Rowe (Celebration Golf Bag) and Trevor Pope (2 remote control helicopters). The results of the sweepstake were eagerly awaited and Brian Haken again managed to amuse us all with his interpretation of the results. There was total confusion when it was realised that nobody had actually backed the winners. Such a laugh! Brian was duly awarded our individual “Duffers Prize” to commemorate his special contribution to the proceedings. It is so good to see a growing group of non players attend our prize giving dinner. The dinner is now evidently a PCB event where players and industry colleagues can get together for a social occasion.
