PCB Golf Day 2014

This was the 22nd year that we have held the PCB Golf Day. The numbers were a little lower this year and around mid morning 18 golfers met in the bar for coffee and bacon rolls. For some it was the chance to get in the frst beers of the day and it may have helped them play better who knows!

We have always been lucky and it was another fine day. We teed off at just after 1 pm. Being towards the end of September it was noticeably gloomy when the last group completed the 18th hole some 5 hours later.

The 19th hole was the opportunity to catch up with other guests who were coming to dinner and to try and determine who may have come first and last! There were some lively discussions as to how to actually score a competition that has been unchanged for 22 years. My special thanks again to David Jones for interpreting the various methods used to record the players efforts on the score cards.

Dinner commenced at 8 pm with a number of non golfing guests who you will spot in the photo gallery below. Richard Wood-Roe opened the evening by welcoming everyone. Our sponsors our so important and we have come to the end of an era where Lloyd Doyle have been our main sponsor for the prizes. We all wanted to convey our thanks to Roy and his team for his generosity over the years. There were a great many absent friends this time due to holidays and other engagements. Many of them had sent personal messages and pledged to be back. We all raised our glasses in anticipation of seeing them again.

The format of the day could not be preserved without the generous contribution from our sponsors and they were individually recognised and thanked for their help. The prizes were a glittering array of selected glassware and trophies and were ceremoniously presented to the winners by Maurice Hubert.

Winners of the pairs competition were Robert Brown of Stevenage Circuits and Brian Reid from Schloetter with 46 points. Second place, also on 46 points and decided on a tie break was won by Jonathan Ford, formerly with Isola, and Richard Wood-Roe, formally with Artetch Circuits.

The Bernard Coles Cup for the highest individual score was won by Robert Brown with 38 points. I have shown below the listing of all the scores so you can assess the spread of our abilities. It really is all about taking part!

Longest drive on the 5th hole was won by Brian Reid Jnr. with Leigh Alinson of Enthone coming second.

Nearest the pin on the 9th was won by Brian Reid with Andy Critcher of Total Board Solutions was second.

Nearest the pin on the 14th was won by Richard Whatcott of Schloetter with Leigh Alinson second again.

Angus Brunton kindly organised a sweepstake. The prize money of £38 somehow went to Robert Brown who managed to pick his own name from the hat before we teed off. Amazing!

Somehow Daniel Griffiths, against his normal form, conspired to achieve the lowest score of the day and was awarded the coveted duffers prize.

Bill Wilkie then entertained us with his usual stream of outrageous jokes and stories. We all look forward to this section of the evening. It is so appreciated that Bill, who is a committed non-golfer, joins us each year and even manages to come up with a few golfing anecdotes.

In customary fashion we then retired to the bar. The hotel staff were very obliging and their vain attempt to close the bar early was overrun by the enthusiastic printed circuit drinking club. We finally signed off in the early hours of the morning to meet at breakfast and compare hangovers.

A special thank you to our sponsors and everyone who attended. We all made it another memorable day in the long history of the Southern PCB Golf Day.
